Obituary of Carmela Turngren

Carmela (Ferraro) Turngren, 94, of Rockaway Township, passed away on Tuesday, April 16, 2024 at Karen Ann Quinlan Hospice, Fredon. She was born and raised in the Bronx and was one of nine children to the late Gennaro and Nunziata Ferraro.

She was a proud Italian American who loved her family and friends, the Bronx, the Yankees, Frank Sinatra, big band music, dancing, playing cards with the girls, pizza, the smell of roasting chestnuts and a good frankfurter!

Carmela started her career by enrolling in secretarial school where she became a master stenographer. Her goal to work for Standard Oil at 30 Rock was met. She later was offered a more senior position but declined in order to have and raise children with her husband Edward. She moved from the Bronx to Bloomfield NJ and later relocated to Rockaway NJ where she spent the remainder of her life. While in Rockaway, she was secretary at the Dennis B O’Brian School where, it was rumored, she did the work of 3 people. She remained in that position until retirement with her organizational skills intact. She was warm, caring, generous and had a great sense of humor that could make anyone smile.

She is survived by a son Edward and wife Cynthia, daughter Lisa, grandson Andrew and wife Jen, a sister Mary and many nieces and nephews.

A memorial mass will be held on Friday, April 26, 2024, 11:00AM at St. Cecilia’s Church, Rockaway. Interment is private. Arrangements by Tuttle Funeral Home, Randolph.  Please visit their website at www.tuttlefh.com for more information or to leave an online condolence for the family.
